Before a trip, we recommend scheduling an appointment with a tropical medicine specialist at least 8 weeks in advance. There, you will receive individual advice on necessary or recommended vaccinations and important health measures for your trip.
Since Kenya is a malaria-risk area, malaria prophylaxis is often recommended. The tropical medicine specialist can also advise you on suitable vaccinations and check whether your existing immunization is sufficient or if booster shots are advisable.
On safari, clothing is generally practical and in earth tones so as not to startle wildlife. In towns and villages, you should wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.
Game drives usually start very early, at around 7:00 a.m., as the animals are most active then. You travel in a vehicle with a pop-up roof that gives you a great all-around view. One pair of binoculars is provided free of charge per vehicle, but you can rent an additional pair for a fee.
Observe the animals calmly and always keep your distance. In most cases, you will be inside the safari vehicle during wildlife viewing, and you may only leave it when your guide allows. Animals must never be touched or fed. It is also important not to leave any litter behind in nature!
In Kenya, tips are an integral part of the income for drivers and guides. As a guideline, you should budget around 30 US dollars per day and vehicle. It helps to always carry cash in small denominations for this purpose.
In the morning and evening you usually eat at your lodge (buffet or set menu). At midday you either get a lunchbox that your driver brings along so you can spend the day out in the bush, or he prepares a warm bush meal for you in nature. During game drives, there is always plenty of free drinking water available in the vehicle. If you have any food intolerances, you should let us know at least four weeks before the trip.
