National Park

Lake Manyara

An oasis of diversity and beauty

  • Lake Manyara National Park

The Lake Manyara National Park is a picturesque sanctuary in northern Tanzania, known for its exceptional wildlife, stunning landscapes, and the impressive flamingos that adorn the shores of Lake Manyara. Covering an area of 330 km², with about two-thirds consisting of the lake, the park is compact yet incredibly diverse.

Impressions
Landscapes and Highlights

The Lake Manyara National Park stands out for its amazing range of ecosystems packed into a small area. This diversity makes it an ideal destination for nature lovers and photographers.

The flat soda lake is the centerpiece of the park. Its shores are lined with flocks of pink flamingos, and the sparkling water provides a spectacular backdrop for wildlife viewing.

Right at the park's entrance are dense groundwater forests dominated by giant fig trees and mahogany trees. Numerous primate species inhabit this area, including green vervet monkeys and baboons.

Further into the park, vast grasslands open up, serving as the habitat for large herds of animals, including zebras, wildebeests, and buffaloes.

The acacia woodlands are particularly known for the park's legendary tree-climbing lions – a rare and fascinating behavior.

At the southern end of the park are natural hot springs known as "Maji Moto." These geothermal springs constantly bubble hot water from the ground, providing an interesting geological highlight.

Wildlife

Despite its small size, Lake Manyara National Park offers an impressive variety of wildlife.

This rare behavior has made the lions of Manyara famous worldwide. It's a captivating sight to see these majestic animals high up in the branches of the acacia trees.

The park is a paradise for birdwatchers with over 400 species. In addition to flamingos, you can also find pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers, and numerous birds of prey here.

Elephants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, and buffaloes are commonly seen in the park. The large herds of elephants, in particular, regularly captivate visitors.

In addition to baboons and green vervet monkeys, the park is also home to bushbabies and occasionally spotted black-and-white colobus monkeys.

Best Time to Visit for Safaris

Tanzania offers unforgettable safari experiences throughout the year. Depending on the season, landscapes, climate, and wildlife viewing opportunities vary.

The dry season is considered the optimal time to visit:
Weather: Sunny days, pleasant temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 °C. Nights cool down to 10 to 15 °C in higher regions like the Serengeti.
Highlights: Witness the spectacular "Great Migration" – huge herds of wildebeest and zebras moving through the Serengeti. The Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater also impress with high animal densities.

The green season delights nature enthusiasts and photographers:
Weather: Warm and pleasant, 25 to 32 °C during the day. Rainfall is usually short and intense.
Highlights: The landscape is lush green, perfect for birdwatching as many migratory birds are present. You can also witness young animals in their natural habitat.

Despite heavier rainfall, Tanzania remains impressive:
Weather: Rainy but the landscape flourishes.
Highlights: Particularly picturesque with high animal concentrations at water sources. Popular areas like the Serengeti National Park remain accessible. Some roads and paths may be challenging to navigate, adding a real sense of adventure to the journey.

The short rainy season combines the benefits of the dry season with fresh vegetation:
Weather: Pleasantly warm, temperatures between 25 and 30 °C. Rain showers are usually brief, often in the afternoon or evening, hardly interrupting safaris.
Highlights: Nature comes alive again, becoming greener, and wildlife remains highly visible. Less dust and fewer visitors make these months particularly attractive for travelers seeking a quieter experience. Ideal for photographers capturing dramatic cloud formations and vibrant colors.

Whether you prefer the exciting animal migration in the dry season or the blooming nature in the rainy season, Tanzania is a paradise year-round. We tailor your journey to ensure you have an unforgettable adventure.
