Stone Town

Between history, culture, and the real Zanzibar

  • Stone Town

Stone Town is the historic old town of Zanzibar and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. For centuries, it was a central trading hub in the Indian Ocean and today it is the cultural heart of the island - characterized by African, Arab, Indian, and European influences.

Do you know where Stone Town got its name from?

The name "Stone Town" comes from the unique construction of the historic city center of Zanzibar. While in many regions of East Africa houses were traditionally built from mud and wood, buildings here were constructed from coral stone under Arab, Persian, and later European influence. These distinctive stone structures gave the neighborhood its name and also served to distinguish it from the surrounding, more simply built settlements. Today, Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and impresses with its unique blend of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences.

Stone Town is located on the west coast of the island of Unguja (Zanzibar) and forms the oldest part of Zanzibar City. The current structure of the city was largely established in the 19th century, when Zanzibar, under Omani rule, became one of the most important trading centers in East Africa. The trade in spices such as cloves brought prosperity to the island. At the same time, Stone Town was also a significant hub in the East African slave trade.

This eventful history is still reflected in the cityscape today. The architecture is unique: buildings made of coral stone, intricately decorated wooden doors, narrow alleyways, and ornate balconies shape the appearance. Different cultural influences are visible everywhere, from Arab courtyards to Indian decorations to European elements from the colonial era.

In 2000, Stone Town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, mainly due to its cultural significance and exceptionally well-preserved historical architecture. Many key attractions such as the House of Wonders, the former Sultan's Palace, or the Old Fort narrate the political and economic importance of the city in past centuries.

Today, Stone Town is not only a historical site but also a vibrant center. Markets, small shops, cafes, and the daily life of the locals make the old town an authentic experience. It is this contrast between history and present that makes Stone Town one of the most fascinating places in Zanzibar.

Cultural Highlights

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site & Old Town Structure

Stone Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and is one of the most significant historical cities in East Africa. The densely built old town with its narrow, winding alleys has remained almost unchanged to this day, giving the place its special character.

  • Architecture & Zanzibar Doors

The architecture of Stone Town is unique and reflects the cultural diversity of the island. The intricately carved wooden doors, which used to indicate the status of their owners and are now considered landmarks of the city, are particularly famous.

  •   Former Slave Market

Stone Town was once a central location in the East African slave trade. The former slave market, now with the Anglican Church, serves as a reminder of this dark chapter in history and is one of the most impressive sites in the city.

  • Sultan's Palace & House of Wonders

These two historical buildings symbolize the era when Zanzibar, under Omani rule, was a significant trading center. They provide insights into the political and social life of past centuries.
