Serengeti National Park

An endless plane full of life

  • Serengeti National Park National Park

The Serengeti National Park is one of the most famous wildlife reserves in the world and a synonym for safaris in Africa. Covering an area of approximately 14,750 km², the Serengeti is Tanzania's crown jewel and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is renowned for its vast open plains, incredible wildlife, and the spectacular Great Migration, which sees millions of animals embark on an epic journey through the savannah every year.

Impressions
Landscapes and Highlights

The Serengeti impresses with a diverse landscape that includes endless plains, rivers, hill ranges, and forests.

The name "Serengeti" comes from the Maasai language and means
"endless plains." These open grasslands are the hallmark
of the park and the home to countless herds of animals.

The distinctive rock formations, also known as koppies, rise from the
plains and provide shelter for lions, leopards, and many smaller
animals.

The Grumeti and Mara rivers are important
water sources for the wildlife and the backdrop for dramatic scenes
during the animal migration, as wildebeests and zebras cross the rivers.

This area is known for dense
forests and is the habitat of hippos and the famous crocodiles
lurking in the Grumeti River.

This region offers
spectacular landscapes with hills and forests and is the best
area to observe the river crossings of the Great Migration at
the Mara River.

The
heart of the park is particularly known for its predators such as lions and
leopards, offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the year.

Wildlife

The Serengeti is home to one of the most diverse animal populations in the world and is renowned for the highest concentration of large mammals in Africa.

Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeests, hundreds of thousands of zebras and
gazelles migrate through the Serengeti in search of fresh grass – a
natural spectacle like no other.

The Serengeti is
known for its high concentration of predators, including lions,
cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. The lion prides of the Serengeti
are particularly famous.

In the wooded areas of the
Serengeti, you can observe herds of elephants and majestic giraffes.

The park's rivers are home to
numerous hippos and some of Africa's largest Nile crocodiles.

With over 500 bird species, including ostriches, secretary birds,
marabou storks, and various birds of prey, the Serengeti is a paradise for
birdwatchers.

Best Time to Visit for Safaris

Tanzania offers unforgettable safari experiences throughout the year. Depending on the season, landscapes, climate, and wildlife viewing opportunities vary.

The dry season is considered the optimal time to visit:

Weather:
Sunny days, pleasant temperatures between 20 and 30 °C. Nights cool down to 10 to 15 °C in
higher regions like the Serengeti.

Highlights:
Witness the spectacular "Great Migration" – huge herds of wildebeests and zebras move through the Serengeti. The Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater also impress with high animal densities.

The green season delights nature lovers and photographers:

Weather:
Warm and pleasant, 25 to 32 °C during the day. Rainfall is usually short and intense.

Highlights:
The landscape is lush green. Perfect for birdwatchers as many migratory birds are present. You can also experience young animals in their natural habitat.

Despite heavier rainfall, Tanzania remains impressive:

Weather:
Rainy, but the landscape flourishes.

Highlights:
Especially picturesque with a high concentration of animals at water sources. Popular areas like the Serengeti National Park remain accessible. Some roads and paths may be challenging to navigate, adding a touch of adventure to the journey.

The short rainy season combines the advantages of the dry season with fresh vegetation:

Weather:
Pleasantly warm, temperatures between 25 and 30 °C. Rain showers are usually brief, often in the afternoon or evening, and do not significantly disrupt safaris.

Highlights:
Nature comes alive again, becoming greener, and wildlife remains highly visible. Less dust and fewer visitors make these months particularly attractive for travelers seeking a quieter experience. Ideal for photographers capturing dramatic cloud formations and rich colors.

Whether you prefer the exciting Great Migration during the dry season or the blooming nature in the rainy season – Tanzania is a paradise year-round. We tailor your journey to ensure you have an unforgettable adventure.
