When travelers think of Tanzania, they usually imagine endless savannas teeming with wildlife, impressive mountain landscapes, and unforgettable safari experiences. But in the north of Tanzania, not far from Moshi, there is a real surprise hidden: the Chemka Hot Springs – one of the most beautiful natural retreats in the country.
Also known as Kikuletwa Hot Springs, these springs are a crystal-clear, geothermal oasis surrounded by palm trees and lush vegetation. They are the perfect place to relax after a safari or a climb up Kilimanjaro.
The Chemka Hot Springs are natural geothermal springs fed by underground water streams originating from Kilimanjaro. Unlike many hot springs worldwide, the water here is pleasantly warm but not hot, making it ideal for swimming and relaxation.
The spring forms an open, deep pool with exceptionally clear, turquoise water. The visibility is so clear that you can see tree roots and small fish beneath the water's surface. The contrast between the bright blue water and the dry savanna landscape makes Chemka a true oasis.
After several days on safari or a challenging Kilimanjaro climb, the Chemka Hot Springs offer pure relaxation. The warm water relaxes tired muscles, while the tranquil surroundings invite you to unwind.
Palms, shaded spots, and dangling tree roots create a unique, almost tropical atmosphere. Chemka is one of the most photogenic places in northern Tanzania and is ideal for travelers looking to discover special and lesser-known locations.
The water is clean and deep, perfect for swimming. For the more adventurous, there are rope swings, while quieter areas invite drifting and relaxation.
Thanks to its convenient location near Moshi and Arusha, Chemka can be easily combined as a day trip or add-on program with:
The Chemka Hot Springs are located about 1-1.5 hours from Moshi and around 2 hours from Arusha (depending on road conditions). The drive takes you through rural villages and open landscapes, providing insights into the local life of northern Tanzania.
Due to partially unpaved roads, we recommend a 4x4 vehicle – we are happy to arrange this as part of your safari or day tour.
The Chemka Hot Springs can be visited all year round. However, the dry seasons are particularly recommended:
During these months, the water is especially clear, and the conditions are ideal for swimming and relaxation. A visit in the morning is recommended as it is quieter then.
The Chemka Hot Springs are much more than just a bathing spot – they offer a refreshing contrast to classic safari landscapes and showcase another fascinating side of Tanzania's nature.
At African Sunrise Expedition, we create customized travel itineraries that go beyond traditional game drives. Whether as a relaxing conclusion after Kilimanjaro or as a peaceful interlude during your safari – Chemka Hot Springs are a perfect addition.
