With the wind of Zanzibar

With the wind of Zanzibar
Turquoise water, traditional dhows, and the true feeling of freedom

When visiting Zanzibar, you will encounter them sooner or later: the elegant traditional dhows with their characteristic triangular sails. They glide seemingly silently over the turquoise Indian Ocean and are inseparable from life on the island to this day. For many travelers, they are one of the most beautiful symbols of Zanzibar. But behind the dhows, there is much more than just a romantic photo motif.

A centuries-old tradition

The history of dhow boats dates back many centuries. Arab traders already used these sailing ships to conduct trade along the East African coast. This made Zanzibar an important hub between Africa, Arabia, and India.

Dhows were used to transport spices, fabrics, fruits, and other goods. At the same time, traders brought cultural influences, architecture, music, and culinary traditions to the island. This unique blend still shapes the culture of Zanzibar today.

Although modern motorboats are now widespread, dhows continue to be part of daily life in many coastal villages. Fishermen use them for their daily catch, while other boats take visitors to sandbanks, coral reefs, or small islands.

Wood craftsmanship

Traditional dhows are mostly made from local wood and often built in elaborate craftsmanship by hand. In some coastal towns of Zanzibar, you can observe boat builders creating new dhows or restoring old ones with astonishing precision.

What is particularly fascinating is the simplicity of the construction: Many techniques have been passed down through generations long before modern tools or machinery were available. Each dhow has its own character and small individual peculiarities.

The large white sails not only give the boats their typical silhouette but also enable them to glide almost noiselessly over the water. Especially at sunset, this creates an almost magical atmosphere.

Dhows and life by the sea

For many people in Zanzibar, dhows are much more than just tourist attractions. They are part of daily life and local identity. Early in the morning, you can see fishermen heading out to sea, while children play on the beach and small boats glide through the shallow waters.

In the evening, many stretches of the coast turn into spectacular settings: The setting sun colors the sky orange and red, while the silhouettes of the dhows slowly glide across the horizon.

Traditional dhow cruises at sunset or day trips like the famous Safari Blue Tour, where visitors can explore the island world and coral reefs around Zanzibar, are particularly popular.

An experience that is part of Zanzibar

A ride on a traditional dhow is one of the most unforgettable moments for many travelers during their stay in Zanzibar. Away from the noise of modern boats, you experience the ocean at a slower pace, accompanied by the wind, the sound of the waves, and the centuries-old history of these special sailboats.

There are various ways for visitors to experience a traditional dhow cruise. Romantic sunset cruises along the coast, private trips to remote sandbanks, or full-day snorkeling and island tours are particularly popular. Many of these trips start in small fishing villages, where you can get an authentic glimpse into local life by the sea even before setting sail.

A particularly well-known example is the famous Safari Blue Tour in the Menai Bay Conservation Area in the southwest of Zanzibar. Visitors sail with traditional dhows through turquoise waters to sandbanks, coral reefs, and small islands. Along the way, there are opportunities for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing, while the crew prepares fresh tropical fruits and a typical Zanzibari seafood barbecue.

It is precisely the combination of traditional seafaring, impressive nature, and relaxed island atmosphere that makes such tours so special. Therefore, when visiting Zanzibar, one should not miss the opportunity to get on board a dhow and discover the Indian Ocean in a traditional way.
